Additional Prayers
Prayer before the Office
The following prayers may be said silently before the Office:
Aperi Domini
Open my mouth, O Lord, to bless thy holy Name: cleanse my heart from all vain, evil, and wandering thoughts; enlighten my understanding and kindle my affections, that I may fittingly recite this Office with attention and devotion, and so may be meet to be heard before the presence of thy divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer of S. Gertrude
O Lord, in union with that divine intention wherewith thou thyself didst offer thy praises to God while upon the earth, I now recite this Office to thee.
“O Lord, hear our prayer.”
If the Officiant says “O Lord, hear our prayer.” instead of “The Lord be with you.”, please respond “And let our cry come unto thee.”
Closing Versicles and Final Pater
Officiant: The Lord be with you. (O Lord, hear our prayer.)
People: And with thy spirit. (And let our cry come unto thee.)
Officiant: Let us bless the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Officiant: May the souls of the faithful, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
People: Amen.
Then all pray “Our Father,” etc., silently.
Officiant: The Lord give us his peace.
People: And life everlasting. Amen.
Final Antiphon of the Blessed Virgin Mary
I. Through II Evensong of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Alma Redemptoris
Officiant: Gracious Mother of our Redeemer,
All: for ever abiding
Heaven’s gateway, and star of ocean, O succour the people,
Who, though falling, strive to rise again.
Thou Maiden who barest thy holy Creator, to the wonder of all nature;
Ever Virgin, after, as before thou receivedst that Ave
From the mouth of Gabriel; have compassion on us sinners.
Officiant: After Childbearing, O Virgin, thou didst remain inviolate.
People: Intercede for us, O Mother of God.
Officiant: Let us pray.
O God, who by the fruitful virginity of blessed Mary hast bestowed upon mankind the reward of eternal salvation: grant, we beseech thee, that we may know the help of her intercession, through whom we have been accounted worthy to receive the Author of our life, Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord.
People: Amen.
Officiant: May the divine assistance remain with us always.
People: And with our absent brothers and sisters. Amen.
II. After II Evensong of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Ave, Regina caelorum
Officiant: Queen of the heavens, we hail thee,
All: Hail thee, Lady of all the Angels;
Thou the dawn, the door of morning
Whence the world’s true Light is risen:
Joy to thee, O Virgin glorious,
Beautiful beyond all other;
Hail, and farewell, O most gracious,
Intercede for us alway to Jesus.
Officiant: Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O holy Virgin.
People: Give me strength against thine enemies.
Officiant: Let us pray.
Grant us, O merciful God, protection in our weakness: that we who celebrate the memory of the holy Mother of God may, through the aid of her intercession, rise again from our sins. Through the same Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
Officiant: May the divine assistance remain with us always.
People: And with our absent brothers and sisters. Amen.
Prayer after the Office
The following prayers may be said silently after the Office:
Sacrosanctae
To the holy and undivided Trinity, to the crucified Humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the fruitful Virginity of the blessed and glorious ever Virgin Mary, and to the whole company of the saints, be everlasting praise, honour, power, and glory from every creature, and unto us the remission of all our sins for ever, world without end. Amen.
